Signal blinking: not red anymore, not green yet… (27)

On August 16th, things look  better .    First, our friend Jessy, one of the two nice Arctic Bay policemen who greeted us during our clearance in Nunavut,  visits Breskell today.

My name is Olivier.

I am a master boatbuilder, a teacher and an hardcore sailor.  I intended to sail my hand-made cold molded wooden  boat named BRESKELL through the famed North West Passage during the summer of 2018.

August 29th at 6:30 am,  At 66 degree 33 minutes 46.9 seconds North we are just on  the Arctic circle .  The temperature is slowly getting warmer.

An Ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, wrote a long time ago:  “they are three kinds of  men:  the dead,  the living and those at sea.”  In Brittany, we have a modern way of saying this old quote:

Motoring to Pond Inlet , we received news from “Destiny” an English aluminum boat we met in Sisimiut.  Like us, they are leaving the Arctic . For now,  they have an engine problem and believe they would be unable to anchor by themselves in Pond Inlet.

August 26th.  No more struggle with ice.  At 72  14. 71 N and 74. 18. 31 W,  we are sailing south aiming for Newfoundland.   It’s over; for us and for any private boats attempting the 2018 North West Passage.  We tried hard, we had great hopes and got close, really close to achieve our …

Saturday, August the 11th.   Prince Regent Inlet is still under an important ice cover.  No way to move in.  Time to use my old surgical skills to patch Breskell wounds.

For now, we are the only boat anchored in Arctic Bay. On land, everyone greets us.  They all propose their help.  Truck drivers, policemen or even simple pedestrians  in the street:  “Where do you come from?” “Do you need any help?”

First thing first.  Soon after dropping the anchor in Arctic bay, I make sure everything is safe on board with the boat ready for the next blow.  Now, I have to return to my immigration clearance.
