In this spectacular movie, entitled “DISKO”, Dominic Joyce, a London professional film-maker, documents sailing in the arctic. Through the lens of this artist, stroke by stroke on his digital canvas, you will discover with us the magic beauty of this place. To do this, Dominic didn’t choose the passenger’s seat of a noisy and smelly chopper landing on ice in a snow blizzard but rather the inquisitive “bird’s eye” of his quiet and efficient drone. To launch his drone, Dominic didn’t choose the thick metal deck of an icebreaker crushing its way across the ice-field but rather the delicate hull of a cold-molded wood epoxy sailboat. Ice-field, growlers, icebergs, glaciers, birds and mammals, all these treasures of the north, are in full display in his documentary done with utter respect for this fragile environment.
Captured by a real artist with an ecological sensitivity, no doubt, but also a very good psychologist. With force and fragility, his camera explores as well the depth of my own sailor’s soul. From the “close-to-the-deck views of a dolphin playing along the hull of my hand-crafted sailboat”, his pictures convey my own most intimate emotions and sadness that such beauty is slowly but surely slipping away. Our childrens’ inheritance, what we have borrowed from our grandchildren, is melting in front of our eyes. A pile of grey, round rubble is awaiting our grandkids in place of the Greenland majestic glacier IIulissat.
And how not to be angry when some lunatic morons, in Washington or elsewhere, deny with stupid jokes what science has established with certainty about the deterioration of our beautiful planet.
